Oil Changes & Filters – Beth answers questions.
Beth

Hi and hello readers! If you read my little blog,
you probably know how much I like to receive questions and emails about my articles. Not
only is it exciting to know that people out there care about their vehicles’ maintenance, but I
have found that it is a great way for me to learn more about car maintenance in the process.

Last month I wrote about repair shops implying the use of name brand oil in their oil changes while using generic oil. My goal was to raise awareness of the effects generic oil can have on your mobile palace.  And as a very perceptive reader pointed out, I forgot to mention anything about the importance of name brand oil filters!   Doug, a AAA member and Girl’s Garage reader, writes:

Dear Girls Garage,

You fail to mention how cheap of an oil Filter you use in that oil change.  A Good oil change is no good without a Quality Name brand Oil Filter to go with it. Right?

Well it turns out Doug is right about one thing; having name brand oil put in your vehicle is no good unless you have a quality name brand oil filter as well. Oil filters are designed to remove contaminates from the oil as it lubricates the engine, and as with the name brand oil, name brand oil filters are held up to certain standards..

AAA Car Care Centers use name brand oil filters from NAPA Auto Parts. NAPA’s oil filters are made by a company called Wix. Wix, a company founded in 1939, earned the U.S. patent for spin-on oil filters in 1954 and since then have continued to expand and improve their products to serve the ever changing auto market. They have 70 years of experience in this market! In fact, Wix oil filters are so good that SAE J806 tests prove that they hold 45% more dirt than their brand competitor, which means you aren’t getting some old generic oil filter, but the best there is!

Using a generic oil filter with quality name brand oil is the equivalent of  wearing sneakers with a cocktail dress…it isn’t pretty. Luckily, you don’t have to worry about generic at AAA Car Care Center because the goal is, and has always been, to do what is best for the customer. And we believe what is best for the customer is quality oil and quality parts.

Questions like Doug’s  are very important to me not only as a AAA employee, but as a driver. I get peace of mind from knowing that quality products are used on my mobile palace during every oil change and that you, the customer, get to enjoy that same quality as well. As always, I look forward to your questions and I hope you have a wonderful May!
